Who Needs Shopkeepers Insurance
Frequently asked Questions
Does it cover my stock if there is a fire caused by a short circuit?
Yes. Short circuits are the #1 cause of fires in Indian markets. This policy covers damage to your stock, furniture, and the building structure due to fire, lightning, and even explosions.
What if someone breaks into my shop at night?
The Burglary and Housebreaking section covers loss of stock and damage to the shop (like a broken shutter or glass) during a break-in. Note: In India, “Burglary” usually requires evidence of “forcible entry” (breaking a lock or window).
Is my outdoor Neon Sign or Glow-sign board covered?
Yes. Most Indian Shopkeeper policies have a specific section for Neon Signs and Plate Glass. This covers accidental breakage or damage due to storms or vandalism.
Does it cover cash stolen from the counter?
The policy usually has a “Money Insurance” section. It covers cash in the till (counter) during business hours and cash in a locked safe after hours. It can also cover cash while you are carrying it to the bank.
What is the "STFI" cover?
STFI stands for Storm, Tempest, Flood, and Inundation. Given the heavy monsoons in Indian cities, this is a critical cover. If rainwater enters your shop and ruins your stock, STFI cover (usually part of the Fire section) pays for the loss.
Can I get a "Bonus" if I don't claim?
While “No Claim Bonus” is more common in motor insurance, many Indian insurers offer a Package Discount the more sections you choose (like adding Baggage or Fidelity cover), the higher the discount on your premium.
What if a customer trips and gets injured inside my shop?
This is covered under the Public Liability section. If a customer sues you for an injury sustained on your premises, the policy pays for the legal fees and the compensation awarded by the court.
Is my stock covered while it is being delivered to a customer?
Standard Shopkeeper insurance covers stock only within the premises. For coverage during delivery, you would need to add a “Transit Insurance” rider or a separate Goods in Transit policy.
